1. Mazda CX-70 axed in America — but it survives here, for now
The Mazda CX-70 has been killed off in the United States, where it will be folded into a five-seat version of its CX-90 twin for the 2027 model year. Before you panic, no changes have been announced for Australia — Mazda Australia told Drive it "can't comment on future product plans", which is car-company speak for the CX-70 staying on sale here for now. We're the only market in the world selling the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 side by side. The US numbers explain the call: just 9,696 CX-70s sold there this year against 34,999 CX-90s. Here, 182 CX-70s have been delivered against 470 CX-90s — still the smaller seller, but a bigger share of the pair.

2. Toyota's next-gen hybrid — and it will sell it to rival carmakers
Toyota has revealed its next-generation hybrid system, built around a brand-new 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with smaller, lighter electric motors and silicon-carbide power electronics, targeting more than 15 per cent lower fuel consumption. It's a "multi-pathway" design: the same hardware can work in a battery EV, a plug-in hybrid or a full hybrid, and fit platforms originally built for EVs. And Toyota isn't keeping it to itself — the company plans to sell the new engines and hybrid systems to other carmakers in the coming years. That should mean cheaper, more efficient hybrids wearing more badges than just Toyota's.

3. Cybercab now outnumbers Model Y in Tesla's Texas robotaxi fleet
Tesla's purpose-built Cybercab has overtaken the Model Y in its authorised Texas robotaxi fleet for the first time. Texas DMV data shows 1,051 vehicles authorised — 544 Cybercabs and 507 Model Ys, a sharp swing from early October when Model Ys still led. One thing to keep straight: that DMV count is vehicles authorised for robotaxi work, not necessarily cars actually carrying passengers. The Cybercab — no steering wheel, no pedals — is still limited to Austin, but Tesla said on its third-quarter earnings call it wants Cybercabs in Dallas next month.
